Cockroaches are infamous for their stealthy nature, and it can be hard to locate them inside of homes or businesses. Even worse, they’re nocturnal and scatter when a light is turned on. In the daytime, they will only venture out of their hiding spots to feed or mate. It’s important to learn how to manage cockroaches by learning what attracts them to your property in the first place. As soon as you notice a roach, it’s best to contact your local pest control company. At Dugas Pest Control, we offer thorough inspections, treatments, and prevention to keep you and your family safe from roaches year-round.
Does DIY cockroach control work?
The short answer is “no”. Although all-natural or at-home methods to get rid of cockroaches may work for a few days, they almost never control the entire infestation. Roaches are great at hiding in the nooks and crannies of your property, making them difficult to find without the help of a trained eye. That said, there are a few DIY methods to prevent roaches in the first place:
- Routinely clean areas that are typically dark or undisturbed. Sweeping and keeping a light on in the area can help deter roaches.
- Fix leaks and eliminate the excess moisture, such as standing water.
- Limit their food sources. Roaches will eat any organic material they can find, including cardboard, soap, fat, grease, crumbs, and garbage. Removing their food source should greatly reduce the population.
- Apply DIY treatments with caution. Traps can work for smaller populations, but over-the-counter sprays aren’t generally recommended, as they typically just shift the roaches from one area of a building to another.
