One of the most common and long standing jokes among Louisiana residents is that the mosquito should be the state bird (instead of the beloved Pelican). The second most common joke we hear is when people say that mosquitoes “carried me away” because they were so thick.
Mosquitoes are not only a major annoyance, but they are also a pest to be controlled as they can potentially be a danger to your health. The saliva of a mosquito is known to carry and transfer serious viruses, such as the West Nile Virus. These cases continue to surface in Louisiana every year.
You might be wondering how you can possibly get rid of mosquitoes (other than moving away) from your yard as they seem to be everywhere in Louisiana! Fortunately, there are easy steps you can take to control the number of mosquitoes around your home and reduce your encounters with these pests.
Tip #1 – Remove Standing Water
The first step is to remove any possible breeding areas for the mosquitoes which means getting rid of standing water in and around your yard. Mosquitoes need standing water to grow their larvae. It takes as little as four days for the larvae to mature, so you want to be certain that there are no places on your property where water is pooling for more than a few days at a time. This can be a real challenge especially with our regular afternoon thunderstorms in the summers!
Ways to reduce stagnant water on your property include:
- Periodically drain any birdbaths or wading pools
- Cover any trash bins
- Remove or turn over any buckets, cans, or other containers that can hold water
- Remove any old tires
- Keep rain gutters and drains free of debris so that the water can drain quickly
- If you do have a pool in your backyard, keep it maintained with the proper cleaning chemicals.
Step 2: Mosquito Control Systems
On top of these precautions, you can wear protective clothing and apply bug repellent to your skin every time you go outside. Or if that doesn’t sound like such a great option, you can give yourself increased peace of mind by enlisting the help of chemical treatments to control the spread of mosquitoes on your property.
At Dugas Pest Control, we recommend the Coastal Mister Mosquito Control System as a good solution for tough mosquito problems. Coastal Mister dispenses the natural Pyrethrum insecticide via misting which helps repel mosquitoes, flies, and gnats from the area over a prolonged length of time. The spray duration and timing is controlled by an electronic timer, making it easy to “set it and forget it”.
Mosquitoes are not an issue to be taken lightly. If you’ve grown up in Louisiana, you might be accustomed to having mosquitoes bite you frequently, but that does not mean that you have to accept mosquito problems where you live!
