Do Mosquito Traps Really Work?

Mosquito traps are contraptions designed to lure in mosquitoes. With technology advancing, mosquito traps are an increasingly effective means of controlling nuisance mosquito populations. Most types of traps not only limit adult mosquito populations but target egg-laying female mosquitoes.

Although there are many types of mosquito traps, most of them are generally considered to be effective in providing a noticeable reduction in mosquito populations.

How Do Mosquito Traps Function?

There are numerous types of mosquito traps that all function slightly differently. For the most part, they function in the following ways:

  1. Mosquito traps work by luring in female mosquitoes, which are the ones that will bite.
  2. Traps will mimic the scents or other signals mosquitoes use to locate blood to feed on.
  3. Common signals used within traps to achieve this are carbon dioxide (which mimics human breath), heat, fragrances, and light.
  4. The trapping methods also differ: some mosquito traps utilize a fan that suck the mosquitoes in, others use an electrocution setup, or a sticky surface to capture the insects.

Carbon Dioxide Mosquito Traps

To locate humans, mosquitoes track their scents and, most importantly, their breath. A carbon dioxide mosquito trap mimics the way human or animal breath smells by emitting carbon dioxide gas. Once the mosquitoes enter the trap, they will not be able to leave. This is due to being sucked in by a fan, stuck on a sticky surface, or electrocuted. The goal of C02 traps is to lure in and eliminate female mosquitoes to stop the population from reproducing.
